Opinion: How Technology is Ramping Up Our Fundraising

GUEST OPINION by KRISTEN WILD of OPERATION FOOD SEARCH – As we reflect on Operation Food Search’s year so far, it’s important to highlight the evolving role of technology in food bank fundraising efforts. While traditional fundraising methods remain vital, the rise of digital platforms has unlocked new ways to engage supporters, raise funds, and drive community action.

In an increasingly digital world, leveraging technology has become crucial for food banks like Operation Food Search to maximize impact. Through virtual events, apps, and online platforms, we’re able to reach broader audiences, streamline operations, and offer convenient ways for supporters to contribute.

GiftAMeal: A prime example of technology driving social change is our partnership with GiftAMeal. This innovative app allows users to support food banks simply by dining out. Guests take a photo of their meal at participating restaurants, which then translates into a meal donation to a local family in need. For every social media platform the photo is shared on, an additional meal is donated, all without cost to the user, as it is funded by the restaurant.

GiftAMeal taps into the widespread use of smartphones and social media, providing a seamless way for users to give back while promoting restaurants that partner with the app. To date, GiftAMeal has donated over $150,000 to Operation Food Search, showing how technology can integrate social good into everyday actions.

Virtual Fundraisers: Since the pandemic, virtual fundraisers have transformed how we engage with our supporters. By moving events online, we not only cut down on logistical costs but also invite participation from people across the country who may not be able to attend in person.

Virtual galas, auctions, campaigns and cooking classes allow us to showcase our mission through engaging videos, real-time bidding and interactive donation platforms, reaching a wider audience than ever before. For example, we partnered with a local James Beard Award-winning chef for a virtual cooking class, Pasta for Packs. We hosted this livestream event to benefit Operation Backpack, an OFS program that provides weekend meals for children who need support when school is out.

In addition to lowering barriers for participation, virtual fundraisers foster engagement through tools like live chats, polling and digital storytelling. This approach keeps the focus on the cause while enabling supporters to take part from the comfort of their own homes.

Online Platforms: Online platforms have revolutionized how we organize events, auctions and fundraisers. Tools like bidding platforms, donation tracking software, and automated text-to-give options make it easier than ever for people to contribute. These platforms streamline the donation process and help us monitor progress in real-time, enhancing transparency and encouraging more participation.

Additionally, automated text messages allow us to send updates, reminders and thank-you notes, keeping donors engaged long after the event is over. With features like real-time updates and bidding alerts, online platforms foster a sense of community even in virtual settings.

Text-to-Give and Mobile Engagement: Text-to-give campaigns offer another straightforward way for supporters to contribute. By sending a simple text, individuals can instantly make a donation, removing barriers and making giving as effortless as possible. This mobile-friendly approach also resonates with younger generations who are accustomed to quick, digital interactions. By integrating mobile-friendly platforms for giving, food banks can keep supporters engaged through regular updates, reminders, and opportunities to donate—all with the convenience of a smartphone.

The shift toward technology-enhanced fundraising offers undeniable benefits for food banks. Digital platforms lower costs, increase engagement, and make it easier for people to give. By incorporating technology into our fundraising efforts, we’re not only reaching new donors but also creating more accessible and innovative ways for everyone to support our mission.

As we continue to embrace technology in our fundraising efforts, we remain committed to finding new and innovative ways to combat food insecurity. Whether through virtual fundraisers, apps like GiftAMeal or text-to-give campaigns, technology plays an essential role in ensuring that no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from. – Kristen Wild
