Editorial Independence Policy
The main editorial mission of Food Bank News is to produce stories that are relevant, insightful and of interest to our core base of readers. In no way do the agendas or interests of external supporters — whether they be corporate sponsors, foundations, or individual donors — have any bearing on the stories we choose to cover or the way in which we choose to cover them. Our highest editorial duty is to our readers.
Food Bank News accepts funding from a wide range of financial supporters as a way of diversifying our revenue stream and ensuring our continued existence and independence. There may be times when foundations or corporate sponsors will be the primary or secondary subject matters of our stories. Editorial integrity and transparency will always guide our decision-making when it comes to our treatment of stories in which our supporters may be part of the subject matter. When funders are covered in our stories, we will always disclose the relationship.
Story ideas will always spring from our editorial work, including our research and on-the-ground reporting. We recognize that some editorially-driven stories and projects may attract the interest of some funders. But the process will never work in reverse: We will never accept funding in exchange for coverage of a specific topic.
Food Bank News will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. We accept anonymous donations for general support only if sufficient safeguards have been put into place in accordance with the membership standards of the Institute of Non-Profit News. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors, their products, services or opinions.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates as a public trust, Food Bank News does not pay certain taxes. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.
