Arlington Food Assistance Center
Director of Programs

The mission of the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) is to provide free,
nutritious, supplemental groceries to individuals and families in need who reside in
Arlington County. Clients are referred to AFAC by the Arlington County Department
of Human Services, local social service agencies, churches, and schools. As a non-profit
organization, AFAC relies heavily on volunteers to assist with the distribution of
groceries to over 2,200 families who come to AFAC each week. AFAC also relies on
the generous gifts of food and funds from our donors to meet the growing demand for
our services. AFAC was founded 31 years ago as an all volunteer agency. Though
AFAC now has 22 staff members, AFAC continues to rely heavily on over 2,400
volunteers to help in distributing food and conducting its programs. See our website

While the principal programs of AFAC (our Free Grocery and Backpack Buddies
programs) are the responsibility of the whole staff, the responsibility of the DOP is for
AFAC’s highly respected fresh produce Plot Against Hunger Program (PLOT), food
recovery programs, and our health and nutrition programs. The DOP will work closely
with the ED/CEO and with other staff members to develop a strategic plan for the
program area, and develop, manage and promote appropriate programs in support of
the mission of AFAC to fight hunger in our community.

– The DOP will be responsible for the development, management and promotion of
the PLOT program and other AFAC programs throughout our community;
– The DOP will develop a strategic plan for current and future programming with
specific measurable objectives, tactics, and timetables;
– The DOP is to establish, grow, nurture and cultivate successful partnerships with
local faith-based organizations, schools, civic organizations, community groups, and
individual gardeners, including the local urban agriculture community, to support the
work of AFAC;
– the DOP will analyze and evaluate outcomes, respond to changing situations, and to
better the provision of program services to our clientele;
– Perform other duties as assigned by the ED/CEO.
The Position Requires:
– The ability to integrate into and work well with our team;
– the ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
– knowledge and/or experience in the non-profit, and/or governmental sectors dealing with nutrition, food production, and food security issues is desirable;
– experience working with volunteers;
– literate in common computer programs, and the internet;
– experience developing programs and the ability to evaluate results;
– has excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and is
comfortable with speaking to various public audiences;
– an individual who can manage their time to complete tasks accurately and on time;
– has the ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
– an individual who is organized, able to accept direction and provide conscientious
leadership, while being sensitive and supportive of the needs of AFAC families;
– and, the ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality at all times.

The position is full-time (40 hours a week) and is exempt from the overtime provisions
of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Compensation is competitive and includes nine paid
holidays, paid annual and medical leave, generous health benefits, and a 401K Plan.
The position reports to the Executive Director & CEO. Work hours are generally 9:00
AM to 5:00 PM. Evening and weekend hours may be required as duties and
responsibilities may demand. Must have the ability to travel throughout Arlington
and nearby counties.
